The use of Structural Funds to support economic activities has to comply with State aid rules. This article briefly reviews the concept of State aid, considers the possibilities afforded to Managing Authorities by the guidelines on State aid for regional development and identifies the obligations of Managing Authorities to notify State aid to the European Commission. The article also provides examples of permissible combinations of Structural Funds and national funds so that the total amount can remain below State aid ceilings.
